Sophisticated design codes meet an adidas archival icon as Y-3 takes on the Superstar. Representing the cutting edge of culture for 50 years, the Superstar has always been important to Y-3, standing out as Yohji Yamamoto’s favorite silhouette.


Paying homage to the sneaker’s groundbreaking design, the brand has crafted a bold new Superstar-inspired silhouette, the Y-3 YOHJI STAR,  bringing out the best of the original in a distinctly Y-3 manner. Experimenting with form and shape, the Y-3 YOHJI STAR re-imagine the iconic Superstar sneaker with a revolutionary new tooling system. Moving from back to front, both the high-top and low-cut silhouettes keep the heel proportions of the original whilst applying an exaggerated aesthetic to the forefoot in order to convey an accentuated sense of bulkiness. Meanwhile, the iconic shell-toe remains a prominent feature on both silhouettes and is seamlessly complemented by the presence of a Y-3 logo on the tongue and Yohji’s signature across the midsole and upper.

 


Staying true to the Superstar’s DNA, the two styles are available in two distinct colorways. First, a tonal black colorway serves as an ode to Yohji’s often muted palette. Next, accompanying this all-black makeup is a white colorway with an ecru upper, core white shell-toe, white stripes and contrasting black eye stays. The two silhouettes are then brought to life through a striking campaign that pays homage to the bond between Yohji Yamamoto and adidas. Leveraging gritty angles, brooding shadows, and unconventional lighting, the campaign juxtaposes adidas’ street culture heritage with the designer’s elevated creative philosophy. Using abstract urban aesthetics, the images accentuate the intricate details of both silhouettes in order to celebrate the nuances at the heart of the collaborative relationship.
